North Korea sentences South Korean reporters to death over review of book about country

A North Korean court sentenced two South Korean journalists and their publishers to death for “seriously insulting the dignity” of the country by reviewing and interviewing the British authors of a book about life in the North, its state media said on Thursday.

North Korea has previously issued harshly worded accusations against South Korean entities and individuals for allegedly violating its dignity, by slandering its leadership and its political system.

The book in English titled “North Korea Confidential” was authored by James Pearson, a Seoul-based correspondent for Reuters, and Daniel Tudor, former correspondent in South Korea for the Economist magazine.

The book, based on interviews with North Korean defectors, diplomats and traders, depicts a growing market economy where ordinary North Koreans enjoy access to South Korea music and TV dramas, fashion and smuggled Chinese and American films. Pearson wrote the book, published in 2015, before joining Reuters.

The Korean-language edition, published earlier this month with the title translated as “Capitalist Republic of Korea”, was reviewed by South Korea’s Dong-A Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo newspapers.

A spokesman for the North’s Central Court said in a statement carried by the country’s official KCNA news agency that the book “viciously slandered the reality of the DPRK”, the initials for North Korea’s official name of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The book painted life in the country as increasingly capitalistic where money can buy power and influence, the spokesman said.

The South Korean journalists who reviewed the book “committed a hideous crime of seriously insulting the dignity of the DPRK with the use of dishonest contents” carried by “North Korea Confidential”, the court spokesman said.

The Central Court has ordered the execution of the journalists, Son Hyo-rim of the Dong-A Ilbo and Yang Ji-ho of the Chosun Ilbo, and the publishers of the newspapers. It also demanded the South Korean government investigate their crimes and punish them, the state media said.

The court statement did not make any mention of punishment for the book’s authors.

A Dong-A Ilbo representative said the newspaper declined to comment and its reporter Son did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Chosun Ilbo reporter Yang declined to comment while a newspaper representative could not be immediately reached for comment. Tudor, the co-author of the book, declined to comment.

A Reuters spokeswoman declined to comment.

“Dong-A Ilbo, Chosun Ilbo and other conservative media in South Korea have so far committed smear campaign against the DPRK nonstop,” KCNA quoted the court as saying. “The criminals hold no right to appeal and the execution will be carried out any moment and at any place without going through any additional procedures.”

Lovi Poe, wala pang planong magpakasal

By: Lito T. Mañago

SAYANG at wala sa thanksgiving blowout na ipinatawag ng Regal Entertainment’s big bosses na sina Mother Lily at Roselle Monteverde ang leading lady ni Vhong Navarro sa box-office hit na Woke Up Like This na si Lovi Poe.

VHONG AT LOVI copy

“I’m gonna go on a vacation soon,” kuwento ni Lovi, “and then back to work na po agad ako.”

“Wala pang plano. Malayung-malayo pa ako roon. I’m just in my 20s. So, enjoy pa muna ako.”

“He doesn’t meddle,” wika ni Lovi. “Alam niya ang nature ng trabaho ko and he supports me all the way.

MARK AT WYN copy

You got this ga!

“Andto kameng lahat para suportahan ka 🙂 I know & I wish na matupad na yung matagal mo nang pangarap. I love you ga go miss world.”

Pilipinas.

“This year kasi ang Miss World. Mas nauna itong project at ayoko namang mag-overlap. Kung hindi ako makahabol this year, baka next year ulit sa Bb. Pilipinas. I’m already 25 and if I won’t give it a try baka mag-regret lang ako,” pagtatapat ni Wyn.

Serye nina Paulo, Ejay at Erich, pinaganda kaya natagalan

PAULO RITZ AT EJAY copy

I would say it’s an original teleserye na pinaghirapan rin ng mga creatives natin to make it different and not to make it similar to Age of Adaline or even Goblin,” sey ni Paulo.

But more than that, ‘yung management rin naman kasi ang nagde-decide and sa tingin namin, ito ‘yung tamang panahon na napagdesisyunan nila para umere itong The Promise of Forever.”

”Ayaw mong ma-extend ‘yung show?”

‘I want to win!’ – Winwyn Marquez

By RUEL J. MENDOZA

“To be honest, I’m so happy. It’s just falling into place because my dad is super supportive.

“When I told him, he was happy. He said go, prove them that you can do it. Prove them that you can speak, prove them that you can shine… I explained to him that it’s not all about your physique, how you look like.

“It’s about voicing out something – ‘beauty with a purpose.’ And I think he realized that,” sey pa ni Wyn.

“Tita Melanie would always say, ‘Join if you want to. If your heart is set to win, go and join.’

And she’s always going to be there to support me.”

“Kasi I was actually scared to join. I was scared of losing, scared of all things that would happen. But sabi niya, ‘If you’re not going to join and you’re going to regret it in the long run, ikaw din ang malulungkot.

Ka-batch niya si Pia Wurtzbach who eventually won the Miss Universe title.

“I want to win. I think lahat ng girls na sumali, gustong manalo. Siyempre, that’s my aim: to win. Whatever God’s plan is, I’ll accept, but I’m here to win,” pagtapos pa ni Winwyn Marquez.

The deal is part of a two-on-two trade that will also send Dave Marcelo to the Elite in exchange for Raymond Aguilar.

“Air Force Ellis” was drafted by the Gin Kings in 2012. He is averaging 3.5 points, 3.5 boards and 1.0 assist this conference.

Dela Cruz, meanwhile, was picked ninth overall by Blackwater in the 2015 draft.

The San Beda standout average 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in his stay with the Elite.

A source told The Manila Bulletin’s Dennis Principe that the deal was a smooth one for both teams.

“Ok na, madali naman nag-agree yung teams. I guess they need to let go of those players para lumabas din laro nila. Both teams believe the destination of all players involve will present a new and challenging environment for all of them,” Principe quoted the source as saying.

Kris at Willie, magsasama sa bagong show

“I’ve been bedridden & recuperating from a bad cough & body aches.”

Why making hit songs is no longer top priority for The CompanY

MEMBERS of the musical group The CompanY, the country’s premier vocal ensemble, said that they have always wanted to come up with another hit single but the system is not set up for it.

1the company copy

“That’s difficult to do. We want to, really honestly. But it’s not supported by the system,” said Moy Ortiz, when asked if there were still efforts to come up with hit songs, at the sideline of the 4th Scholastic Readers Cup held at Shangri-la Makati City recently.

“It’s difficult to come up with an original hit when you only have three TV stations that will make you sing. We are not in any network so we are not the priority. TV is difficult. In terms of radio, not to be accusatory, but you know, there is a very light form of age-ism in a way because if you are of a certain age, and you don’t fit the demographic of Top 40, you don’t get in the playlist.

“That happens to local artists, that happens to international artists no matter how big you are. Look, the two members of The Beatles. They still come up with beautiful music but Paul McCartney can’t get on the playlist unless Rihanna and Kanye West are with him. It’s pretty sad but that’s the reality,” said Ortiz. “On the flip side, we are blessed with longevity and a catalog of hits. We can keep on doing live performances armed with our hits. We want to, but the system is not set up for it.”

In 1991, The CompanY blasted into the music scene and later spawned memorable OPM songs such as “Everlasting Love,” “Now That I Have You,” “Muntik Na Kitang Minahal,” and “Pakisabi Na Lang.”

With 27 albums under four different record labels, the vocal group is busy promoting their latest CD called “Nostalgia 2” under Universal Records Philippines. Aside from Ortiz, the other current members of the group are Annie Quintos, Sweet Plantado, Cecile Bautista, and OJ Mariano.

Ortiz said that most of their gigs these days are corporate. “Although sometimes you don’t see us with a lot of public performances, like 90 percent of our work is actually corporate.”

“Modesty aside, the reason why we are still in the game, the members of the group are articulate in English and Tagalog and some in Bisaya. So for purposes of the client, if there’s a product to push, they can do it via our spiels.

“Whenever we have corporate shows, we give it our best because our aim here is repeat business. Even in terms of pricing, we try to keep it very, very reasonable so that hindi kami ‘wham bam thank you mam.’ Babalik at babalik sa amin. We are blessed because our clients have been very loyal to us,” Ortiz added.

On Sept. 20, The CompanY will be one of the headliners for a fund-raising event in San Juan for the victims of war in Mindanao and soldiers of Marawi City. Joining the show are Ryan Cayabyab, Celeste Legaspi, and Basil Valdez. The vocal group will also perform at Robinson’s Magnolia in Quezon City on Sept. 9.
